eCorn ~ Arts Camp 2010
eCorn Oak Hills Church
March 18, 2010

A note from the editor...

You'll be seeing a new logo popping up on our bulletin, eCorn, postcards, and other things. We feel that, as a church, we are moving forward in very positive and encouraging ways, and we think a new logo helps us to express this new corporate enthusiasm and vision. The oak tree symbolizes many things-strength and steadfastness, growth and vitality, deep rootedness and longevity. It is the provider of shade, a shelter in a storm, and even an invitation to climb up and have fun! We hope you like our new logo, and grow in Christ with us!

More Prayer Walks are scheduled for this Saturday, March 20. Join us as we walk through our neighborhoods. This is a great way to meet fellow Oak Hillians, as well as lift up our neighbors in prayer. Questions? Contact Lorraine at lorraine.rothenburg@oakhills.org or 983-0182 x33.

Powerhouse Ministries has a new kitchen. Please join us for a brainstorming meeting on this Sunday at 12:30 pm in the Library. We'll discuss how this addition will impact our meal ministry to the Transition Center. For more info, contact Stephenie at stephenie.carr@oakhills.org
or Ann Bodnar at 351-0532.

If you have come to a point in your spiritual life where you'd like to be baptized, come to our Baptism Class on March 28 at 11 am in Room M-207. For more information, contact Lorraine Rothenburg.

Arts Camp is set for June 14-18. We're already planning for this summer's camp for children entering first through sixth grade. If you'd like to be involved as a teacher, assistant, small group shepherd, child care giver, or help in any other way, please contact Colleen, colleen.gray@oakhills.org, or Sharon, sharon.richards@oakhills.org. Stop by the Spotlight Booth today for volunteer applications and registration forms.

Our Easter Egg Hunt and BBQ are scheduled for the Saturday before Easter. We need individually wrapped candy (NO nuts or peanut butter, please), as well as plastic eggs. Candy must be able to fit inside a plastic egg. Bring your donations to the Welcome Center by the end of March.

We are sending a mission team to Trinidad over Spring Break (March 26-April 5). Among other things, we are going to be teaching children how to swim! We need pool/swimming supplies (floaties; toys; swimsuits; etc.) The swimsuits should be new and modest (one piece for girls; trunks for boys) of various sizes. Please bring any items to the Welcome Center prior to March 24.

As a church, we are memorizing Matthew 5:13-16. If you'd like a memorization tool to help you in this effort, click here.

Today's feature article is written by Oak Hillian Bri Lynaugh. Bri was an Arts "camper" in her younger years and is now one of our much-loved and much-needed camp volunteers. Graduating this spring with AA Degrees in both Liberal Studies and Social Science, Bri intends to transfer to a four year school. She's planning to major in Theatre or Musical Theatre and possibly to double major in Communications. Performing since age five, she has been in over 35 full length productions, and dozens of other showcases and short scenes.

There is nothing like an established tradition among friends or family that breaks the monotony of the norm or brings a sense of zest and self-fulfillment. I am blessed to have many of these wonderful traditions in my life, among them eating at Chili's every Thursday, oatmeal chocolate chip cookies once a week, watching Survivor (yes, for all 20 seasons), and reading Pride and Prejudice every year. Above all of these wonderful traditions there is one single event that takes place every year at our church that culminates in energetic worship sessions, giving projects, arts and crafts, performing, yellow stars, enthusiastic team cheers, matching t-shirts, dress-up days, and Otter Pops. This would be the one and only -- Arts Camp.

I have had the privilege of being involved in Arts Camp from almost every possible role. I participated in the first year of Arts Camp as a 6th grader in 2001, I have been a shepherd, programming staffer, hand motion lady (affectionately referred to as an "hml"), actor, assistant teacher, and a lead teacher. Arts Camp has been a huge part of my life and it is undoubtedly the highlight of my year every year, bar none. Arts Camp is truly a special and unique experience that will stick with children for the rest of their lives. Our entire campus is transformed for the entire week of Arts Camp and simply radiates with joy! I've seen children develop deep connections with their teachers and their respective art that is unlike any other. But the truly remarkable aspect of Arts Camp is its tendency to bring children and leaders alike closer to God. For many of the kids, this is a new and exciting way to be exposed to the message of God's love in fun and creative ways. To be honest I'm not sure who has more fun at Arts Camp -- the kids or the leaders!

To find out more about Arts Camp and how you can be involved, please contact Sharon, sharon.richards@oakhills.org, or Colleen, colleen.gray@oakhills.org. There are all kinds of great ways to be a part of this memorable week (I should know. I've done most of them!).

Also, prayerfully consider who you can invite. Is there a family in your neighborhood you'd like to share God's love with? Maybe the opening is through their children. What about your children's or grandchildren's friends? Registration is open now for Oak Hillians bringing their nonchurched friends. You can direct interested parties to our brand new blog (http://artscamp.wordpress.com/), where they can learn more about course offerings and print out a registration form.

Arts Camp is such a rewarding upbeat addition to my life, and I feel so blessed that I can be a part of it and that I can share it with others every year. Once you get involved, I bet you'll feel exactly the same way.
