| So what do you really do at the church? |

My job is to walk around and look very important. I can often be found raiding the four refrigerators on campus. I have the highest key clearance that there is on staff (higher than even Mike Lueken) and that means something very important, I am led to believe. I drink coffee. I am 14th on the list that the alarm company calls when the alarm goes off. I think deep thoughts |
| Education |
|
Scanlan Elementary School, Chicago (I spent most of Mrs. Sulcheski's third grade class sitting in the naughty chair which was behind the piano). Fenger High School, Chicago. Suomi College, Hancock, Michigan. Western Illinois University (Where I became a follower of Christ and immediately dropped of college and traveled around the country for a while). New Tribes Bible Institute, Wisconsin. Trinity College, Illinois. Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Illinois. |
| I grew up in |
|
This questions assumes something that may not be warranted. But my chronological childhood was spent in a lower middle class blue collar neighborhood on the south side of Chicago (but I am still a Cubs fan --- I have a righteous disdain for the White Sox. I don't care if they won the world series in 05. I will not root for them. I am a Cubs fan. I am not bi-soxual.) |
| Family info |
|
I have been married to Diane since 1982. We have three children, Holly (1984), Heidi (1986) and Helena (or Laney, 1999). I am a most fortunate man. We have two dogs (Lou Boudreau and Schweiger), Five cats (Inside: Bishop and Mia. Outside: Tiger, Yogi and Delilah), One rabbit who lives a miserable existence with no purpose (Daisy). We used to have an assortment of chickens and geese and a ball python. I'm not going to talk about them. We live in an old house on five acres in El Dorado Hills. We love it there. My mother (Margaret) lives here in Folsom. My father died in 1991. I still miss him. I have an older sister (Marcia) in the Chicago area and a younger brother (Reed) in the middle of nowhere in Alaska. He is uncivilized and he chews with his mouth open. |
| Do you have a weird habit? |
|
I like to cut the fat off of pieces of red meat (grilled to medium rare) and eat them separately. I sleep standing up. |
| Favorite book |
|
Impossible to limit to one favorite. Anything by Dallas Willard. Addiction and Grace, by Gerald May. Heaven by Peter Kreeft. Anything by C. S. Lewis. Till We Have Faces, Surprised by Joy and Weight of Glory are three of my favorites, but I read most everything he has written over and over. And the book that overwhelmed me this past year, was Gilead by Marilynne Robinson, one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. |
| Favorite movie |
| This is embarrassing, but I love Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea. I wish I was more like Matthew. Others include Shawshank Redemption, Around the Bend, Pee Wee's Great Adventure and almost anything with Jimmy Stewart in it. I really enjoy movies. |
| Favorite saying |
|
I have a gazillion of them and they change all the time. Here are three of my favorites from Winston Churchill: "He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire." "He is a modest little man who has a good deal to be modest about." "Never hold discussions with the monkey when the organ grinder is in the room." And here are three more of my favorites: "There comes a time when one asks even of Shakespeare, even of Beethoven, is this all? -- Aldous Huxley "Is it not strange that sheep's guts should hale souls out of men's bodies?" -- Shakespeare "God will do everything in His power to assure that everybody will go to heaven who can stand it." -- Dallas Willard |
| Favorite thing to do |
|
Sit on the beach, in a comfortable chair, on the northern California coast, on a warm sunny day, with a good book and hours of uninterrupted time ahead of me. And the next day doing it again. And then getting on my motorcycle and heading to the next beach to do the very same thing. Second place: Sitting in the left field bleachers watching a Cubs' game with some good friends. Third place: Doing the second thing during the World Series as the Cubs take it all. I have never done this third thing. |
| Favorite team |

Duh. The Chicago Cubs. A game at Wrigley field will give you the answers to the deepest questions of meaning in the universe. |
| Favorite color |
|
I do not have one. I would not want the other colors to feel offended or insecure or slighted. Although Winston Churchill had an opinion about this: He said: "I cannot pretend to feel impartial about colours. I rejoice with the brilliant ones am genuinely sorry for the poor browns." |
| What is your dream place in the world |
|
I would be on an ancient Scandinavian whaling vessel hunting whales in order to eat the blubber. Second Place: Playing third base for the Chicago Cubs when they win the World Series. |
| One thing to do once in life |

Sail across the ocean. Second Place: Learn to fly fish really well. |

| Do you have any fears, irrational or otherwise? |
|
I am afraid of people who don't know me, but who look at me sincerely and want to hug me. I am afraid of multi-level marketers. I have a recurring nightmare where I am in school, it's finals week, and I forgot to go to school all semester. I have another recurring nightmare about underwear, but I'm not going to talk about that. |
| 15 minutes of fame |
|
I have been quoted in public settings by Bill Hybels, Dallas Willard and Edwin Meese. I had my name on the marquee outside Wrigley Field. A book on financial planning by John Tofilon is dedicated to me. I led worship at the 1979 NAB Triennial in Bismark, North Dakota. I was almost arrested in Virginia in 1974, but I'm not going to talk about that. |

No matter what anyone says, I did not hide the broccoli behind the books in Brian Robertson's office. That was Rick Leary. |
| Something we'd be surprised to learn about you |
|
I once killed and skinned a large boa constrictor in the jungles of Panama. I hate cottage cheese. I toured with a Swing Choir from Western Illinois University, but i'm not going to talk about that. |

|
In my third year of college while at Western Illinois University. A friend told me about his experience meeting Jesus. I went home that night and prayed a skeptic's prayer. I fell asleep and woke up the next morning very assured that I had made contact with God Himself. That was in January of 1974. |
| Am particularly fond of/moved by/drawn to this verse |
|
"Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." -- Luke 15:1,2 |
| Seriously though... |

The Cubs will win the World Series in 2008. This will be 100 years since their last World Series win. Then the end will come. |
